MP-CHIP SHIELD is a professional grade asphalt based coating that is especially designed to seal and bond
to the aggregate in chip sealed road surfaces and stop them from unraveling and dislodging. Chip seal* is an
economical paving method for preserving and maintaining asphalt pavements, especially the ones with sound
structure. Additionally, Chip sealing is also used to improve the skid resistance. For chip sealing, the surface is
sprayed with asphalt (hot or emulsified) and covered with uniform size (single size) aggregate. The aggregate
cover is then rolled for proper compaction and the excess is removed by sweeping and vacuuming. With age and
steady use, the aggregate cover starts abrading and unraveling, causing road hazards, e.g.  slick spots and
loose aggregate causing damage to car windshield and paint.
MP-CHIP SHIELD
MP-CHIP SHIELD is an asphalt emulsion based coating that is fully compatible with chip seal systems. It has
an outstanding degree of toughness, adhesion to aggregate and road surfaces. The high rubber/polymer
content provides outstanding anchoring to the aggregate cover, thus eliminating, abrasion, unraveling and
dislodging.  MP-CHIP SHIELD, has a proven performance record as a highly cost efficient method for the
protection of chip sealed roads.
MP-CHIP SHIELD provides maximum protection against;
  • Weathering and traffic damage.
  • Moisture and water penetration
  • Freeze/ thaw cycle damage
  • The loss of surface aggregate, thus maintaining the skid resistance properties.
OUTSTANDING FEATURES
  • Highly cost-effective. Pavements are maintained at fraction of the cost of aggregate removal
    and re-chip sealing.
  • Excellent adhesion to aggregate, and resistance to abrasion. Will completely stop aggregate
unraveling. The aggregate are solidly anchored in the coating.
  • Completely eliminates dusting from abraded aggregate.
  • Will maintain the skid resistance of the pavement surface. Will keep pavements safe for
    driving or play.
  • Will improve the longevity of the chip sealed surfaces.
  • Low odor, and non-Irritating:
  • Water based: No solvent fumes. Low V.O.C. product.
RECOMMENDED USES

MP-CHIP SHIELD is recommended for all chip sealed surfaces that are in sound and stable condition.  It
provides rich and uniform textured surfaces that are durable, skid resistant and easy to maintain.

COLOR

Black after full cure.
APPLICATION
  1. Surface Preparation:
             a.  Clean pavement of all dirt, dust and loose aggregate.
             b.  Replace the aggregate cover if it is sufficiently lost from some areas.
             c.  Repair all pavement defects;
                     - cracks shall be filled with either hot or cold crack filler (STAR STA-FLEX)
                     - patch all broken and alligatored areas with either hot mix or cold patch material.
                     - all base and sub-base problems shall be corrected.
             d.  All oxidized areas shall be primed either with thinned down track coat, a thin coat of
MP-CHIP SHIELD or specialty primer e.g. STAR ONE STEP.

     2.
Preparation of the material (Mix Designs):

MP-CHIP SHIELD is supplied in a concentrated form that has to be mixed with water, sand and
additives (optional), according to the following general formula:
MP-CHIP SHIELD
100
Gals.
Water
20
Gals. Max.
Sand/Aggreates
400-600
Lb.
Additive, STAR MICRO-LOCK
2 - 3
Gals.
The use of a mechanical agitator is recommended.  The material shall be mixed to a uniform consistency and
kept agitated during the application, the use of  STAR MICRO-LOCK, a rubberizing additive, is recommended
to further boost the overall performance of the sealcoating system.  It imparts adhesion, flexibility, toughness,
and improved longevity to the chip sealed surface.
     3. Method

Airless spray, mechanical squeegee, hand tools-brushes and squeegees.  Apply the first coat with
suitable equipment and allow drying thoroughly before applying the second coat.  The second coat
should be spray applied to yield the correct coverage rate, thus the optimum performance.
4.  Coverage Rates:
Low to medium traffic
-Two (2) coats,
0.25 gallon of the mix/sq. yard
High traffic
-Three (3) coats
0.35 gallon of the mix/sq. yard
Apply each coat to dry sufficiently.  The first coat shall be allowed to dry at least 4 hrs prior to the
application of the 2
nd. Coat.
Allow the second and the final coat to min. 8 hrs. under good drying conditions.
If 3
rd. coat is applied, allow the second coat to dry min 6 hrs..
Allow the final coat to dry at least for 8 hrs.
5. Weather/Ambient Conditions:
Temperature: Min. 50º F and forecasted for the next 48 hr. The temperature shall be
min. 50 Deg F and rising. At no time the pavement shall be allowed to reach freezing
    temperatures during the night.
Pavement at 100º or higher will have to be cooled down by fogging, in the absence of
which additional 5% water may be added to the mix design. .
Relative humidity: Less than 60% is preferred, max.  80%.
Do not apply on rainy, foggy or extremely humid days.
6.  Exclusions:       To obtain the best performance results.
Apply according to manufacturers detailed application specifications.
MP-CHIP SHIELD is designed to be applied in two (2) coats for best results on
low to medium traffic bearing roads. One coat may be applied on newer surfaces
where the original asphalt binder (holding the aggregate) has not aged
sufficiently to lose its binding properties.
